ST PIUS X IPAD INITIATIVE


PROGRAM GOALS

•To create a learning environment where students are challenged to use technology to expand their skills and knowledge

•To provide students with the technological skills to be competitive in a global society

•Extend the learning process beyond the classroom

•Place technology in the hands of the students

WHY IPADS?

•The iPad offers:

•Over ten thousand educational apps

•A durable outer shell that is lightweight and portable

•A 10 hour active battery life

•Two built-in cameras

•fast start-up time.

THE PROGRAM

•All students will receive a 16GB wifi-only iPad2

•iPads will be the responsibility of the students and their families

•Each iPad will be managed by “Jamf,” our mobile device management software.

PROGRAM COST (Middle School Students Only)

•$180 for the first year

•Workbook replacement fee. Includes all necessary apps and novels.

•Each subsequent year, cost will be approximately $129

•This will cover apps, novels and other materials for iPad

•Each family is responsible for purchasing a cover or case for the iPad. Please choose a cover that best matches your child’s lifestyle and activities. Many covers average $40

•Power adapters are included with iPad. Ear buds, keyboards and other accessories can be purchased if you choose, but are not included in the program cost.

INSURANCE

•St. Pius X will not require families to carry insurance for the device, as the deductible for most

Homeowner insurance policies is $500.

•However, families are encouraged to look into purchasing individual policies/riders for the iPad, if they are interested.

DAILY USE

•Students will be required to bring their iPads to school, fully charged

•Power adaptors should remain at home.

•IPAD DOES NOT CHARGE WHEN PLUGGED INTO COMPUTER

•Students must take care and precaution to ensure that their iPad does not get damaged, misplaced or stolen (see Acceptable Use Policy)

•Covers must be on the iPad at all times

SECURITY

•Jamf – Mobile Device Management

•All iPads will be controlled by this software

•Educational apps can be sent to students through this program

•At anytime, individual iPads can be locked, monitored or wiped.

•Find my iPad

•Free service for families

•Locates the iPad using GPS if it is lost or stolen

SECURITY

• Safe Browser – provided by SPX

•A filtered internet browser that provides “always-on” filtering, regardless of location.

•CIPA compliant (Children’s Internet Protection Act)

•Provides two levels of filtering, middle school and high school (see website for more information)

•SPX will manage this software and will be able to monitor usage

•SPX will provide the only web-browser installed on the iPad. Students are prohibited from downloading other browsers (see Acceptable Use Policy)

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE IPAD MALFUNCTIONS?

•A team of students will be created and managed by the IT department to provide support for SPX students and their iPads throughout the school day.

•Students will be encouraged to submit problems and concerns to this group.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE IPAD BREAKS?

All broken or damaged iPads should be reported to the Principal’s office

The family is responsible for the cost of repair or replacement.

SPX will facilitate the process

Full replacement is $499. Repairs will be charged as invoiced.

iPads have a one year warranty for hardware

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOUR IPAD IS STOLEN?

•Please report this immediately to the Principal’s office.

•If Find my iPad cannot locate the device, we will erase all content.

•Families will be responsible for the replacement cost of $499

•Students must take care and concern to ensure that they are aware of their iPad’s location at all times.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

•All iPads are 16GB Wi-Fi only.

•For best usage at home, a wireless network is needed.

•However, the iPad is still usable at home without internet; not all apps will be accessible.

•Every student will need to create an Apple ID to access apps and material provided by SPX

Printing

Students will be able to print from iPads at SPX;

To set-up printing at home, a printer must be airprint compatible.

St. Pius will provide all Apps to the students. Please do not download yourself.

•GarageBand- music creation, audio recording

•iBooks – an eReader app

•WolframAlpha – Encyclopedia type app

•iMovie – content creation

•Graphing Calculator HD

•iHomework – a planner/organizer

PERSONALIZED CONTENT

•Students are allowed to download their own content onto the iPad. This will be done by connecting the iPad to a home computer.

•Free, appropriate apps can be downloaded from the app store

•Students and parents should enter into an agreement about downloading personal content.

•Inappropriate app usage can be monitored by SPX

•Note, if space becomes a concern, all apps and materials purchased by SPX take precedent over personal content.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

•Be careful with your iPad

•Remember that it is yours! Do not eat or drink near it.

•Do not place it anywhere it may be damaged

•Always have your iPad in a secure place. Never leave it out in the open.

•If you have athletic practice, please make sure it is in a safe place.

•Charge your iPad nightly.

•Clean your iPad regularly

•Remember your passwords, but do not ever distribute them
